Ein Grund-Wissen über die Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Basics hilft Dir enorm beim Schrauben an deinen Modulen.
Diese Grundlagen werde ich Dir in diesem Artikel näher bringen. Ich versuche diese anschaulich und leicht bekömmlich zu beschreiben, also verzeiht mir, falls ich mich technisch einmal nicht ganz korrekt ausdrücke. Also, los geht`s mit den Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Basics.
Steuerspannungen
Spannungen
Grundlage analoger Synthesizer sind Spannungen. Einem Ozillator werden per Spannung Tonhöhen übermittelt, ein Amplifier verstärkt Spannungen und so weiter. Bei einem modularen Synthesizer wird dies noch deutlicher.
Es gibt Steuerspannungen, wie zum Beispiel die einer Hüllerkurve, und Signalspannungen, wie zum Beispiel die eines Oszillators. Im Grunde genommen sind diese jedoch ein und das selbe! So kann auch eine Steuerspannung als Audiosignal hörbar gemacht werden (wenn sie im hörbaren Bereich liegt), oder der Oszillator als Modulationsquelle – und damit als Steuerspannung – verwendet werden. Dies ist eines der wichtigsten Grundannahmen beim experimentieren mit Modular.
Wenn du deine Soundquellen, zum Beispiel Oszillatoren oder Drum-Module, per Tastatur oder Sequencer ansteuerst, benutzt Du dabei 5 verschiedene „Typen“ von Steuerspannungen.
Gates
Gates kannst du dir am einfachsten mit dem Druck einer Klavier-Taste verbildlichen. Dem Modul wird also ein Impuls mitgeteilt, der über die Dauer des Tasten-Drucks bestehen bleibt und beim loslassen wieder erlischt. Es werden also Anfangspunkt, Dauer & Endpunkt übermittelt.
Trigger
Ein Trigger übermittelt eine kurze Impuls-Spitze. Der „offene Teil“ eines Gates fehlt hier also. Deswegen werden Trigger unter anderem oft für Drum-Sounds verwendet.
Pitch CV
Pitch CVs teilen einem Oszillator die Tonhöhe mit. Sobald der „PitchCV-Out“ des Sequencers oder der Klaviatur mit dem „PitchCV-In“ des Oszillators verbunden ist, werden verschiedene Tonhöhen hörbar.
Clock
Ein Clock bzw. Sync Signal gibt die BPM vor. Falls du zum Beispiel zwei Sequencer synchronisieren möchtest, muss du den „Clock Out“ des einen mit dem „Clock In“ des anderen verbinden. Beachte, dass es dabei verschiedene „Clock-Typen“ gibt, zum Beispiel 24ppqn (pulses per quarter note), 48ppqn oder 1ppqn. Beide Sequencer müssen logischerweise auf den gleichen Clock-Typ eingestellt sein.
Oft werden auch LFOs also Clock-Geber verwendet. Dabei benutzt Du am besten den Square-Ausgang. Über die LFO-Rate kannst du dann die BPM einstellen.
Resets
Bei dem obigen Beispiel mit den zwei Sequencern würden nun beide in der selben Geschwindigkeit laufen. Allerdings fehlt noch die Start / Stop Funktion. Ohne diese wird der Slave-Sequencer einfach immer weiter laufen, auch wenn Du den Master-Sequencer stoppst. Der Start / Stop Befehl wird über „Reset“ gesendet.
Regler
Um die Steuerspannungen eines Eurorack Modular Synthesizer weiter zu verarbeiten, gibt es einige weitere Parameter. Die wichtigsten sind:
Attenutators
Attenuators sind Abschwächer. Sie reduzieren also die Stärke – die Amplitude – eines Signals. Wenn du den Input an deiner Soundkarte herunterregelst, ist ein Attenuator am Werk.
In der Modular Welt werden sie oft benutzt um die Auswirkung einer CV zu steuern. Wenn du zum Beispiel einen LFO auf das Filter patcht, wird sich der Filter fast komplett schliessen und öffnen. Schaltest du einen Attenuator dazwischen, kannst du den Bereich einschränken.
Polarizers/Attenuvators
Polarizer und Attenuvators invertieren ein Signal und können es gleichzeitig abschwächen. Das kann nützlich sein, wenn du ein gespiegelte Version einer CV benötigst oder CVs voneinander subtrahieren möchtest.
Module, die das Signal nicht abschwächen können, werden Inverter genannt.
Offsets
Mit einem Offset Regler kannst du eine Steuerspannung um einen festen Wert verschieben. Wenn du Dich an deinen Mathe-Untericht zurückerinnert willst: Die Funktion wird auf der y-Achse verschoben – der Achsenabschnitt ändert sich also.
Praktisch gesehen kannst du damit zB den Wirkungsbereich eines LFOs verändern. Wenn der LFO auf den Filter geroutet ist, kannst du mittels eines Offsets bestimmen, in welchem Bereich die Filtereckfrequenz verschoben wird.
Modulatoren und Funktionen
Des Weiteren gibt es Modulationsquellen, allen voran Hüllkurven und LFOs.
Hüllkurven
Hüllkurven beeinflussen einen zeitlichen Ablauf.
Dazu gibt es die Parameter Attack, Decay, Sustain und Release.
Solche Envelopes werden oft auf den Amplifier und die Filter geroutet. Mehr Details findest du in meinem Artikel über Subtraktive Klangsynthese.
LFOs
Eine weitere Modulationsquelle sind LFOs – Low Frequencie Oscillators. Die Schwinungen befinden sich meistens unterhalb des Hörbereichs und können zum Beispiel auf den VCO, VCF und VCA geschickt werden. Auch hier verweise ich an den Artikel über subtrkative Klangsynthese.
Das soll zum Anfang erst mal genügen, da Du damit schon sehr viele verschiedene Patches ausführen kannst.
